Campus Recycling

GW is committed to sustainability, and required by law to recycle waste generated from residence halls, public spaces, offices and classroom space.

You may place the following items into recycling bins throughout campus as long as they are empty and clean:

Plastics numbers 1 through 7

  • Water bottles
  • Soda bottles
  • Carryout containers with a recycling number

See the chart below for recycling number symbols that you will find on the bottom of plastic containers.

Aluminum

  • Soda cans

Glass

  • Drink containers
  • Brown, green, and clear glass

Paper

  • Newspapers
  • Printer paper
  • Colored paper
  • Magazines
  • Post-it notes
  • Notebooks without metal binding
  • Envelopes (with and without plastic)
  • Glossy paper
  • Cereal boxes
  • Granola bar boxes
  • Cardboard (Unfold and place neatly near the paper recycling bins)

The following items are recyclable but should NOT be placed in the recycling bins on campus. Please contact Risk Management (risk@gwu.edu or 202-994-3265) to recycle these items:

  • Batteries;
  • Electronic materials (e.g., old computers, TVs);
  • Light bulbs containing mercury (e.g. fluorescent light bulbs); and
  • Toner cartridges.
