HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING

The heating and air conditioning systems (HVAC) in nearly all University buildings cannot simultaneously operate both air conditioning and heat; only one or the other can operated at one time. GW Facilities uses extended weather forecast and historical weather data to determine when the systems should be switched each fall and spring. Generally, heat is turned on in mid October, and air conditioning is turned on in mid April, although allowances are made for variable weather patterns. During the transition time right before and after a switchover, it’s suggested that residents utilize extra blankets and sweaters, as well as open their windows in the fall and spring to moderate temperature levels in their individual rooms before the heat is turned on, if they feel cold.

All HVAC system air filters are cleaned and replaced regularly. Students who believe the air vents have not been cleaned may place a request on FIXit. In some residence halls, A/C unit may have drainage pans installed overhead to condensation. If the drain begins to leak during A/C season, be sure to have all windows closed and make sure that steam from the bathroom is not directly hitting the location of the vent. Sometimes condensation will not drain quickly and may cause leaks within your room. When leaks occur, take preventative measures by moving belongings out of the area, and call Facilities Customer Servicet (202) 994-6706 for assistance.
