Dishwashers are provided in many of the residence hall apartment style living options.
Operational Instructions and Notes:
-
Scrape food left on plates into the sink/garbage disposal or into the trash can and dispose of it. Rinse dishes prior to putting them in the dishwasher. Food left on dishes can get caught in the drain and clog up the dishwasher.
-
Turn on the garbage disposal while running cold water to grind up food waste. Run the garbage disposal each time before you run the dishwasher; they both use the same drain and any food left in the garbage disposal might prevent the water from the dishwasher from draining properly and lead to the sink overflowing. Do not run your dishwasher if your garbage disposal is clogged up.
-
Add detergent to the cup located on the inside of the main door of the dishwasher. Use only approved dishwasher detergent. Hand washing detergent is not for dishwashers. It typically produces excess suds which will cause the dishwasher to overflow.
-
Put all plastic containers, lids, cups, spoons, etc. on the top rack of the dishwasher only. Items placed in the lower rack can fall through the slots and melt on the heating element at the bottom of the dishwasher.
-
Close door and lock.
-
Move or press knob to desired settings and start machine.
-
Between uses periodically check the bottom of the dishwasher to help ensure that it is clean and clear of food waste and any small items that may have fallen so that the sprayers and drains will work properly.

Additional Notes about Portable Dishwashers:
In some University buildings, including The Dakota (rooms that end in 07), the dishwasher is a portable unit, which must be attached to the sink faucet in order to use it. There is a nozzle in the back of the dishwasher that screws on to the sink faucet. After attaching the unit to the sink faucet, turn the water dial to the highest hot water setting, and load and start the dishwasher as normal. After the cycle ends, unscrew the unit from the sink faucet, and return the dishwasher to its storage location. These dishwashers are just as efficient as built-in models, but because of the configuration of certain apartment’s kitchens, these provide a more efficient use of space.
