Future Development
The recently approved Foggy Bottom Campus Plan: 2006 – 2025 sets forth an approach to future campus development that embodies:
Sustainable Design:
-
Tree canopy preserved and enhanced through a comprehensive streetscape plan, being developed in partnership with Casey Trees.
-
26,000 square feet of green roof components incorporated into the mixed use, transit oriented development proposed for Square 54.
-
Campus parking accommodated below-grade to make more efficient use of space resources and reduce storm water runoff.
-
Commitment to achieve the equivalent of a minimum LEED score of 16 points for each new building project identified in the Campus plan.
Transit Oriented Development:-
Campus located at the hub of an efficient and extensive public transit network (including the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metrorail station).
-
New development concentrated in core of campus to promote close proximity to mass transit.
-
Open space and streetscape plans promote and enhance the campus pedestrian experience.
-
Shuttle bus service limits the need for single-car trips between campuses.
-
Video conferencing, online library resources and document management systems reduce the need for physical movement between the campuses.
-
GW encourages use of METRO, including participating in WMATA’s Metrocheck program (allowing employees to pay for public transportation costs on a pre-tax basis).
Neighborhood Planning Principles:
-
The Campus Plan is the result of a two-year community-based planning process.
-
13% of residential units in Square 54 will be affordable / workforce housing.
-
GW’s precedent-setting Historic Preservation Plan (including campus historic district) preserves buildings of architectural and historic significance and preserves the diverse character of the community.
